Models of Defeat

چکیده
Capture the Flag is a wargaming environment that includes intelligent, autonomous adversaries. In the past, the planner controlling the adversaries focused on two goals: occupying objectives and attrition. However, attrition is actually a means to an end, defeat of one’s enemies, not an end in itself, and not necessarily desirable. Similarly, coalition operations plan for defeat by applying force for political and psychological effect. For Capture the Flag to plan for these effects, it needs a model of defeat. We model the ”capacity for conflict” as a leaky bucket: when a unit’s bucket is full, it has no more capacity for conflict and it capitulates. Flow into and out of the bucket is modulated by several factors including attrition and heroism. The model is inherently dynamical, so it exhibits the time-dependent behaviors one observes in real conflicts; for example, identical attacks will have different effects on capitulation as a function of their timing.

Objectives: Identifying suicidal ideation in adolescents can help timely intervention for people at risk. The present study was conducted with the aim of the moderating role of gender in the relationship between psychological strain, sensitivity to rejection and defeat with adolescent suicide ideation in adolescents: the mediating role of depression and hopelessness. Methods: The current cros...
متن کاملSex differences in the effects of social defeat on brain and behavior in the California mouse: Insights from a monogamous rodent.
Women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder, yet the use of female animal models in studying the biological basis of depression lags behind that of males. The social defeat model uses social stress to generate depression-like symptoms in order to study the neurobiological mechanisms. In general, social defeat is difficult to apply in female rodents. Ho...
متن کاملSocial defeat models in animal science: What we have learned from rodent models
Studies on stress and its impacts on animals are very important in many fields of science, including animal science, because various stresses influence animal production and animal welfare. In particular, the social stresses within animal groups have profound impact on animals, with the potential to induce abnormal behaviors and health problems. In humans, social stress induces several health p...
متن کاملThe prospective role of defeat and entrapment in depression and anxiety: A 12-month longitudinal study
The concepts of "defeat" (representing failed social struggle) and "entrapment" (representing an inability to escape from a situation) have emerged from the animal literature, providing insight into the health consequences of low social rank. Evolutionary models suggest that these constructs co-occur and can lead to the development of mental disorders, although there is limited empirical eviden...

The current pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had unprecedented reach and shown the need for strong, compassionate and evidence-based decisions to effectively stop the spread of the disease and save lives. While aggressive in its response, Rwanda prioritized the lives of its people – a human right that some governments forget to focus on. The country t...
متن کاملDefeat and entrapment: more than meets the eye? Applying network analysis to estimate dimensions of highly correlated constructs
BACKGROUND Defeat and entrapment have been shown to be of central relevance to the development of different disorders. However, it remains unclear whether they represent two distinct constructs or one overall latent variable. One reason for the unclarity is that traditional factor analytic techniques have trouble estimating the right number of clusters in highly correlated data. In this study, ...
